History often knows little of the great leaders that shape events. This is especially true of Alejandro, Alex, Castillo. While the crisis itself destroyed few records, the lack of preservation in the ensuing months and years led to the loss of a great deal of archival information. In many cases, hard drives were recoverable, but optical media had degraded and paper had been wholly destroyed. This is the case with Castillo. We have no record of his birth and little paper trail to tell us definitely who he was though there are several candidates.
Through analysis of the details in his account, Alex Castillo was born in Los Angeles County between 1967 and 1970. He makes reference to a gang called Lil Watts. It's unclear if he was a member or unaffiliated since this name also applied to the region as well as the gang. This would put his hometown in one of three cities in the old Los Angeles region: Lawndale, Hawthorne or Gardena. According to several accounts, Castillo held multiple graduate degrees and was an expert in many fields. Castillo himself claims he washed out with terminal master's degrees because he was merely hiding from his life and did not have a genuine drive. Accounts of other survivors in the Wynnefield Refuge noted that his wall held diplomas from Drexel Univeristy, University of Michigan and University of Washington, but they disagree on the specifics.
Castillo, in his diaries, judges himself to be mentally ill. He alludes frequently to some trauma early in life that precipitated mental collapse from which he never totally recovered. Most Pyschological Historians agree that he did suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and that he was a shy man who disliked the visibility he achieved. However, he probably suffered from no acute disorder at the time of the event as evidenced by the clarity of his own journals. In the end, his shyness and dislike for attention led him to drop out of sight. His ultimate fate is still unknown.
